Probabilities of an Asteroid or Comet Crashing into Earth

Rock-like objects that orbit the sun but are not quite large enough to be classified as planets are called asteroids. In some circles, they are also referred to as minor planets or planetoids. Asteroids come in sizes ranging from hundreds of miles to just a few feet across, and there are millions of them. The combined mass of all of the asteroids is significantly less than that of the moon orbiting Earth. Asteroids can pose a threat despite their relatively small size. Earth has been struck by a great number of asteroids in the past, and even more will do so in the years to come.


Discovery of Asteroid

Giuseppe Piazzi made an accidental discovery of a small object in 1801, while he was making a star map. The object had a diameter of 1000 kilometers (600 miles), and it was located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Piazzi referred to the thing as Ceres. The asteroid was the very first of its kind to be found. The year 1802 saw the discovery of two more. What are the chances that a comet or an asteroid will collide with Earth?

The likelihood of an impact is proportional to the object's size: the larger the comet or asteroid, the lower the likelihood of an impact, given that there are many more objects of a smaller size in space than there are large ones. Every day, tons of debris, the majority of which is comprised of pieces no larger than grains of sand, enter the atmosphere of Earth and are burned up. Methods of defense against the threat posed by asteroids

The PI "slice and dice" method intercepts asteroids or comets as they approach the Earth and could be deployed by launch vehicles that already exist today, such as SpaceX's Falcon 9 and NASA's SLS for larger targets. PI stands for the Planetary Defense Initiative. The calculations of the physicists show that smaller targets, such as the Chelyabinsk meteor, could be intercepted just minutes before impact using much smaller launchers similar to ICBM interceptors.

  • This satellite would be positioned somewhere in the vicinity of Venus' orbit. The satellite would be tilted so that its back was facing the sun.
  • Utilizing laser bees, which are lasers powered by sunlight and are a potential alternative solution to this issue. They were going to encircle the asteroid and zap the surface of it.
  • Because of this, the surface of the asteroid would start to boil off and evaporate. Ejecta are the large chunks of material that are launched from the surface of the asteroid.
  • The ejecta would be moving forward with some momentum. The velocity of the asteroid might be altered if this technique is used.
